Taking care of an infant is a noble undertaking because it’s not on the list of the easiest jobs on the planet. It’s a challenge that calls for dedication and high-level commitment. It takes a mix of knowledge, financial resources and dexterous handling of an infant. There is no cause for worry if it’s your first time to take care of an infant since many of the things needed for apt infant care are adaptable and can be learned within a short time.
Handling and infant
You have to know how to handle a newborn before you can feed it, bath it and cradle it to sleep. Note that infants are delicate and susceptible to numerous ailments. Their immunity system is not strong enough to fight off pathogens that the children can contract from dirty hands. You should therefore always remember to wash or sanitize your hands.
As you pick up the baby, have one hand on its buttocks as the other one supports the ridge between its head and neck. Cradle the baby in slow side-to-side motions. Don’t shake the baby violently especially if it’s a newborn because this can lead to fatal shocks. As the baby grows, buy suitable carriers, strollers and infant car seats.
Medical and nutritional requirements
Infants experience more abdominal pains compared to adults. Their stomachs are not used to the dietary elements found in milk and other infant foods. Normally, the problems fade away with time though it’s advisable to seek medical advice from a pediatrician. Take care of the infant’s oral hygiene by wiping its tongue using a soft piece of cloth and warm salty water.
This steps up its appetite for food and lowers its chances of contracting bacterial infections. Fever, rushes, and restlessness are usually a sign of infection or allergic reactions which should be taken care of by giving the infant a well-balanced diet besides putting it on the right treatment regimen. Breast milk is an essential source of nutrients that kids need for growth and development in the first two years.
Infants don’t have a specific shower time. This is because it’s not easy to know when the child may mess its nappies or slump its face in a freshly baked cake. Use medicated baby soaps. Dry off the baby using a clean towel and apply baby oil to its entire body.Baby powder should be applied between the folding parts of its limbs for sweat absorption and prevention of heat rash. Food hygiene is as significant as the sterilization of an infant’s feeding bottle and other utensils.
Exercise is an essential aspect of kids’ health. You can help babies that are less than six months old to stretch out their bodies by holding them in their arms and giving them slight jumps on yours. This should be done gently to avoid nerve or muscle damage.
